Our Club History

The Eugene Chess Club was founded in April 2022 as an Oregon domestic nonprofit corporation. The Club exists to develop, encourage, promote, support, sponsor and coordinate chess activities throughout Eugene, Oregon and surrounding community.

We first met at the downtown campus of Lane Community College, hosting both casual chess games, and rated chess quads. We found that most players just wanted a fun place to play chess, and so we soon discontinued our rated events, and added one week a month meeting at The Bier Stein.

This quickly became our most popular meeting spot, and so we decided to move away for the college to achieve that warm environment each week. We found a wonderful partner in Bill & Tim's BBQ, which has been our primary home since 2023. We continue to meet at both Bill & Tim's and The Bier Stein.

Throughout our history, the club has hosted rated quads, a tournament in 2022 and casual blitz tournaments at Headquarters Winery. These events have been sporadic, though we hope to develop a more consistent calendar of events in the near future.

Our club has grown significantly over the years, with over 300 names on our mailing list. We are excited by the passion for chess in our community, and appreciate so much all those who have attended before, and will again soon!
